Safety and community rules

Hiya works because people treat each other well. These are the rules, and this is how we enforce them.

The rules

  • You must be 18 or older to use Hiya.
  • No sexual content, nudity or sexual requests, in any mode.
  • No harassment, bullying, threats or hate based on who someone is.
  • No spam, scams, selling, or asking people for money.
  • No sharing other people's personal information.
  • Don't record or screenshot people to share without their consent.

What happens when you report someone

  • The chat ends straight away and you won't be matched with that person again.
  • Your report goes to a moderator with the last 20 messages attached. Your identity isn't shared.
  • Anyone reported by several people within an hour is banned automatically for 24 hours, and moderators can extend that permanently.
  • Anyone reported as underage is removed from video chat immediately while we review.

Protect yourself

  • Use a nickname, not your real name or another app's handle.
  • Never share your address, school, workplace, passwords or bank details.
  • Leave any chat that feels wrong. Tap Next; you don't owe anyone an explanation.

If someone is in danger

If you believe someone is at immediate risk, contact your local emergency services. To report child sexual abuse material, use your national hotline (in the US, the NCMEC CyberTipline) and email us at the address on our contact page.
