How to stay safe when you talk to strangers online

Practical habits that keep anonymous chat fun: what to share, what to keep private, and what to do when a chat goes wrong.

Talking to strangers can be one of the best parts of the internet. You meet people you'd never cross paths with, hear how life looks somewhere else, and practise conversations without pressure. A few habits keep it that way.

Keep identifying details to yourself

  • Use a nickname that isn't your full name or your handle on other apps.
  • Share your country or city if you like, never your address, school or workplace.
  • Don't send photos that show your house, street signs, a uniform or your car's number plate.
  • Never share passwords, one-time codes or bank details, whatever the reason someone gives.

Watch for the usual red flags

  • Someone pushes to move the chat to another app straight away.
  • They ask for photos, money, gift cards or 'help' with an account.
  • The story keeps changing, or they rush you to decide something.
  • They ask how old you are and keep steering back to it.

Leaving is always allowed

You never owe a stranger a conversation. Tap Next to move on, or Report if something crossed a line. Reporting ends the chat instantly, blocks that person for you, and sends the last messages to a moderator. The other person isn't told who reported them.

Meeting in person

If a friendship grows and you decide to meet, choose a busy public place, tell a friend where you'll be, and get there on your own. Video call first so you know the person is who they say they are.
